Boid BlasterThis game emerged from the intersection of my wanting to vent my frustration with the FlappyBird phenomenon and my desire to instill interest in computer programming in my son. I am still exasperated that a program that could be written by a grade-schooler over a free weekend could make someone millions! (For those from my generation who grew up programming Ataris and Apples, can you imaging writing a game that neglected the joystick and used only the fire button for player input?) As to my more noble purpose, the jury is still out. In my day, a single person could script a game on the same level, though perhaps less polished and refined, as those sold on the market. I wrote decent knock-offs of both Frogger and Joust as a teenager. But an individual programmer cannot begin to mimic the complexity of today's video game world (make your own Skyrim lately, anybody?) So convincing my son of the merits and rewards of programming is much more challenging. Perhaps therein lies the silver lining of FlappyBird....
